Sankranti Celebrations at Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan: Our Country, Our Culture, and Our Children.
Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranti, is a major harvest festival celebrated across India with great joy and gratitude. This auspicious festival was celebrated with immense enthusiasm and cultural splendour at Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan. The campus came alive with vibrant colours, traditional music, and cheerful faces, reflecting the true spirit of Sankranti—abundance, hope, and new beginnings.
Makar Sankranti, also known as Uttarayana, marks the transition of the Sun from Dhanu to Makara, symbolising positivity and renewal. Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan, known for its commitment to quality education and holistic development, once again proved its dedication to preserving and promoting Indian culture through this meaningful celebration.
One of the major highlights of the programme was the Burra Katha, a traditional storytelling art form of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Through engaging narration, rhythm, and music, students explained the importance of Sankranti and how it is celebrated in different parts of India such as Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Tamilnadu, and Punjab, showcasing the country’s unity in diversity.
The warmth of Bhogi Mantalu, marking the first day of Sankranti, filled the atmosphere with joy and positivity. The ceremonial lighting of the bonfire symbolised discarding the old and welcoming new hopes. Young girls performing a graceful dance around the Bhogi Mantalu added charm and festive spirit to the occasion.
A spiritually enriching segment of the event was Goda Devi Kalyanam, depicting the divine marriage of Goddess Andal and Lord Ranganatha. The dance drama beautifully conveyed the cultural and religious significance of Sankranti as a thanksgiving festival for a bountiful harvest.
The celebrations were further enhanced by traditional activities such as Bommala Koluvu, which attracted parents and visitors with its colourful doll arrangements, and the Sankranti Food Fest, where delicious traditional dishes delighted everyone. The All States Dance performed by primary students was a visual treat, highlighting India’s rich cultural diversity through vibrant costumes and energetic movements.
Folk traditions were brought to life through characters like Haridasu, Komma Dasari, Sodi Amma, Jangama Devara, 4 Rythanna, showcasing rural culture and the importance of farmers. The arrival of Gangireddulu added excitement and authenticity, while the Bhogi Pallu ceremony, filled with blessings from elders, created a heartwarming moment of togetherness.
The programme concluded with prize distribution for the Rangoli competition and a sincere words of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of parents, teachers, staff, and management.
Sri Chitturi Vasu Prakash, the Director of the school, extended his heartfelt Sankranti wishes, appreciating the students and parents for keeping traditions alive.
The Sankranti celebrations at Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan were not just festive but educational, reinforcing cultural values and unity. The event ended on a joyful note, leaving everyone with happy memories and a deeper connection to Indian traditions.
